About Us - The Rumbolo Family

Our little branch of the Rumbolo Family got started in 1993 when I met Cathy while stationed at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina during the final 4 years of my Marine Corps career. When Cathy and I met she was a single never before married 29 yr old woman and I was a divorced 34 yr old single father trying to figure out how to raise two boys aged four and two. I count myself very lucky indeed to have met Cathy and grateful to the good Lord for sending her my way. I always consider that Cathy is about the best description of Proverbs 31.

Over the years we have been very blessed - we have two good sons - Michael & Derek and three precious daughters - Carlyn, Delenn & Lorien. We have also managed to acquire 3 cats, and small dog (who acts more human then some people) - all Cathy's little critters - she is a bit of an animal lover.

We currently live in Concord, North Carolina - just a bit north of Charlotte, and have pretty much settled down. During my twenty years in the Marine Corps I was never in the same place for more then a few years and Cathy herself grew up in a Marine Corps family so she moved around a lot herself. Following my Marine Corps retirement in 1996 we moved to Hartsville, South Carolina so I could take a job as a network engineer with Sonoco Products - packaging company based there. Hartsville was quite an experience - it was a classic small southern town and after a bit it was too small - a lot of wonderful people -but the highlight of the town at the time was dinner at Shoney's.

After two years of being there, we both wanted something a bit more and considered opportunities in places as diverse as a government contract position in Germany to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, but we really wanted to stay close to the Carolinas. Cathy was born in North Carolina and I spent a good portion of my Marine Corps career in North Carolina, I felt at home there. Plus both our sets of parents live in Jacksonville, NC - the home of Camp Lejeune. Cathy's parents settled there when her father retired from the Marines in the late 1980s and my parents moved there from New York when my father retired from Grumman Corporation in 1993. So when I was offered a position with Wachovia (then First Union) in 1998 we jumped at the chance to move to the Charlotte area. We really do love it here - plenty of shopping, entertainment and excellent schools in the Concord area.

We keep pretty busy - Cathy has her dream job - "Mom" and keeping after our five children and home is a job I certainly couldn't do. I am a senior network engineer with Wachovia and kept busy with projects at work. In our family time we all enjoy visiting historical sites - one of our best family vacations was a trip to the National Battlefield Memorial at Gettysburg, Pa. We also like amusement parks and regularly visit places like Carowinds and Kings Dominion. Each summer we try to spend at least one week or at least a long 4 day weekend at the beach on Topsail Island in North Carolina. We also enjoy white-water rafting and have taken the older children on a couple of rafting adventures and are planning more trips.
